Booting OpenBSD/macppc on an Apple 2005 PowerBook G4

May 9, 2022

After you have finished installing OpenBSD/macppc, boot it by doing the following.

  1. Power on/reboot the computer and press the Control-Option-O-F keys together while it comes up. Be sure to hold them down until you enter the OpenFirmware. You will know that you are in it when you are greeted with a 0 > prompt.
  2. At the 0 > prompt type: boot hd:,ofwboot /bsd and press the return key.

If the operating system does not boot, be sure that you have typed everything correctly. A missing colon, comma, or added/removed space will result in failure.

Once you have verified that the operating system boots, if you would like it to boot automatically, do the following.

  1. At the 0 > prompt type: setenv auto-boot? true and press the return key.
  2. At the 0 > prompt type: setenv boot-device hd:,ofwboot and press the return key.
  3. At the 0 > prompt type: setenv boot-file /bsd and press the return key.
  4. At the 0 > prompt type: reset-all and press the return key.
